Realism literature project 6

Realism shows the reality behind things it doesnt require you to use your imagination its just out there. Its not sugarcoated or based its something that you just read hear or see and automatically know what it is.

1. a. "The story of an hour" Mrs. Mallard is a lady whom probably does everything her husband wants yet second guesses marriage. In the story she has a husband who supposedly dies. She is told that her husband died, sobs a little and walks to her room. While looking out a simple window she hears and sees things that make her feel incredible. "The delicious rain was in the air. in the street below a peddler was crying his waves. the notes of a distant song which some was one singing reacherd her faint and sparrow twittering" The way this was described seems like she never paid any attention to these types of things before and it almost has a relaxed feel which she probably lacked. The author explains her feeling and to a suprise she was glad her husband was "DEAD". "Free, Body and Soul Free." Thats what she said and it shows her happiness. Her husband comes home and she drops dead because her joy was turned into disappointment.
b. The social issue Chopin wants to solve is women's rights. She believes women are basically slaves to their husbands. She wanted people to see the reality behind marriage.

2. a. Fredrick Douglass was a slave who seeked freedom. In the story "The battle with Mr. Covey" he tells of an encounter with a man who rented him for a year."You have seen a man made a slave, You shall see a slave made man" Fredrick douglass used that quote to reflect on his fight with Mr. Covey. Fredrick wen through a lot with him. He even tried to tell his big master on Mr. Covey. Fredrick tried many things but when once confronted by him he decided to fight back. This fight made Mr. Covey not hit Douglass again.

b. Social issue: Slavery was the social issue in this story. Douglass wanted to show people how bad slaves really had it.

c. Purpose for writing this? He was a slave self educated and wanted people to feel his place and let them know what he wen through. He was happy by his defeat. "It was a glorius ressurection from the tombs of slavery to the heaven of freedom"

3. The news is a perfect example of realism everyday i turn on the television and see horrible and gruesome things. The news shows everything that is happening and its hard to hear anything positive.
