Dark Romanticism Literature Project 5

1. A. Nathaniel Hawthorne-He would be against transcendentalism because he believed part of his family were evil. He disowned his family and knew all people weren't good and pure. His family was his proof.

B. Herman Melville-Melville would definitely not be considered pure or good. He witnessed cannibals and knew that the world held unpure people. He wrote a book about a shark eating a sailors leg off called"Moby Dick". This shows that his mind held a little grain of evil and this would not be God's thoughts.

C. Edgar Allen Poe- This author is completely insane and would have disagreed with Transcendentalist because of what happened in his life. This author wrote about disturbing events that happened when the character was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

2. I don't believe everyone is good nor evil however, some things i disagree with are evil. I believe i would be a dark romantic because i don't believe the world or people are pure or good based on the things i see on the news. I think the Transcendentalist were crazy themselves if they thought the things they thought their beliefs were messed up.

3.Read one of the stories.

4. Poe's "The Black Cat" was very amazing yet devilish. He started as someone who described his love for pets. "i was especially fond of animals, and was indulged by my parents with a great variety of pets" Poe had a cat named Pluto he really loved this cat. "Pluto was the cat's name-was my favorite pet and playmate." Poe then talks about how he becomes very moody and irratible and then he snaps. " i seized him when in his fright at my violence he inflicted a slight wound upon my hand with his teeth. The fury of a demon instanly possessed me. I knew myself no longer. My original soul seemed at once to take its flight from my body; and a more than fiendish malevolence, gin nurtured thrilled every fibre of my frame. i took then from my coat pocket a pin knife opened it grasped the poor beast by the throat, and cut one if its eyes from the socket! i blush, i burn, i shudder while pen the damnable atrocity" This story was definaltyl crazy and shows the difference between Transcendentalist and Dark Romantics. Poe should have gone to a crazy bin. Poe would have thought he was indeed pure. Transcendentalists are really wrong on what they believe. One thing that really stuck out to me was "Evil thoughts became my sole intimates the darkest and most evil of thoughts" That shows that there are evil thoughts in our minds.

5."The Raven" How it stuck out and how is it anti transcendental? He is visited by a bird who will never go away and will always make him suffer. "From my nooks surcease of sorrow for the lost Lenore. For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore" this poem is about a raven who represents death coming and will never leave and constantly leave him in sorrow. This is anti transcendental because the Transcendentals would have never believed in a bird talking to someone or anything in that sense. Poe was an absolute lunatic.

6. When Poe was born his parents died. He was taken in by a merchant named John Allen. His brothe died and his sister went insane. He was a ddicted to drugs and often wrote aout this. All of Poe's wives died and he became more and more insane. He was smart and a dedicated writer. His writings are analyzed by many and are said to be about himself but given alter ego names.

You do a great job using direct evidence. Keep up the good work.

You are on pace to be out of here in April . . . or earlier.
