Capital punishment is a form of discipline brought upon others because of harsh crimes they’ve committed. These crimes are more than likely murder, and when someone is convicted of this, depending on the state, judge, and jurors that person will be sentenced to capital punishment also know as the death penalty. These include electric chair, lethal injection, hanging, and sometimes use of a firing squad. Many people think that this is the best method of punishment. I however strongly disagree because it shows that killing people is right by killing other people, the cost of killing people is more than the cost of housing an inmate for life, some are innocent and unjustly convicted, and the methods are gruesome and inhumane.
Lex Talionis which is a Latin phrase meaning a life for a life is one of the sole reasons people are for the death penalty. That is not only sickening and disgusting but a disgrace to humans everywhere. A life for a life proves absolutely nothing. We are suppose to be teaching people that killing is wrong not killing people to show them that killing is wrong. Exchanging life for another is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. We as Americans are messing up lives and have our priorities messed up. Vengeance, in my opinion, is ignorance.
In most murder cases defendants have two trials; one to determine if the defendant is guilty or not and second being whether or not they get the death penalty. Defendants receiving the death penalty are granted an appeal, as you could imagine this takes time and M-O-N-E-Y. Whose money? Our money. It is a proven fact that those who are seeking the death penalty cost more than housing an inmate for life. The reason being the lengthy time of the trials and the many steps everyone must take to ensure "fairness". In Texas the average cost of a capital trial is than the cost to incarcerate a person for forty years. That is absolutely ridiculous.
As of 1999, sixty-nine people on death row were released based on DNA evidence. In 1997 a Louisiana teen was sentenced to death after claims of being seen robbing and killing a grocer. This teen in 2004 was exonerated because his DNA did not match that of the real killer. This is just another ridiculous reason of why the death penalty should be unconstitutional. How in the world do we let innocent people be convicted and murdered when we have criminals roaming our streets.
Capital punishment is considered by many the most inhumane feeling alive. It is cruel and disgusting. In Alabama during a 1983 execution a man by the name of John Evans was electrocuted. The first 900 volts didn’t kill him so they tried again. The second set of volts didn’t kill him. Witnesses said that Evans skull was smoking but doctors said he was still conscious. Witnesses also spoke of the smell of vomit and feces. The guard sent another 900 volts through Evans body and he was killed. This goes back and plays a factor in cruel and unusual punishment, which is in the eighth amendment. Evan’s rights were violated. It is not fair how this man was treated.
On June 24, 2004 in New York the death penalty was declared unconstitutional. Every other state in the United States still uses the death penalty. It is extremely ridiculous and anyone who participates is sick. The death penalty shows no remorse for anyone’s life. As of February 15, 2007 there were fifty new prisoners added to the death row. These prisoners will wait for death. Can you imagine the feeling that a person has knowing that they’re going to die but has to wait for it?

Modernism Literature project 6
I chose the Harlem Renaissance because i always hear of old black people talking about it and feel kind of left out. I like the way that this is a time period for blacks' progression as artists and other things that contributed to our country. The Harlem Renaissance wasnt only the upbringing of blacks but the knowledge to them that they to could succeed in this world. They were always looked down upon because their parents were probably slaves but when they wrote novels made music and invented things it showed that blacks not doing anything was just a theory.
The story i read "sweat" by zora neale hurston was really great. The character Delia in this story went through a lot with her husband even sometimes being beat by him. Delia did everything in her power to make sure he had everything in his will power. She washed clothes for white people and took the money to provide shelter and food for her and her husband. Her husband was so unappreciative and its sad that someone would so someone like he did her. He cheated on her and all kind of awful things but end the end it served him right to be bitten by a snake. In an opinion he was killed by his worst enemy the devil which is apparently his alter ego. I understand why the story was called sweat though. It was called that because Delia slaved and sweat and cried about all of these things. i really enjoyed this story because it tells the tell of an african americans womens hard life.
Zora Neale Hurston did her best and during these times she shows how she could make a literary impact being the color she was. I'm sure she was greatly appreciated during these times. one thing that sparked my interest in this story was when the husband was calling out for her
when he was being bit by the snake. Weird! Examples: He picked up the whip and glared down at her. Delia went on with her work. She went out into the yard and returned with a galvanized tub and set it on the washbench. She saw that Sykes had kicked all of the clothes together again, and now stood in her way truculently, his whole manner hoping, praying, for an argument."Ah don't keer if you never git through. Ah done promised Gawd and a couple of other men, Ah aint gointer have it in mah house. Don't gimme no lip neither, else Ah'll throw 'em out and put mah fist up side yo' head to boot." Sykes is indeed controlling. She seized the iron skillet from the stove and struck a defensive pose, which act surprised him greatly, coming from her. It cowed him and he did not strike her as he usually did. Delia is defending herself.
Richard Coey
This poem is about a guy who is rich and unhappy. He apparently speaks to the town but is not as happy as ordinary people.
"And Richard Cory, one calm summer night,
1
Went home and put a bullet through his head."
He kills himself and shows an example of disallusionment. Money and Riches arent exactly guaranteed to buy you happiness.
Mending wall
This poem is about a guy who wants his privacy but also wants to have a relationship with his neighbor. the fence represents his own space.
"He is all pine and I am apple orchard.
My apple trees will never get across
And eat the cones under his pines, I tell him.
He only says, “Good fences make good neighbours.”
Dream Deferred
This poem is an example of the harlem Renaissance. It is asking what happens to dreams?
"What happens to a dream deferred?"
The Negro Speaks of Rivers- This poem is about a guy who is talking about the rivers hes seen. He is also talking about how his soul is old like rivers. The poem would be under Harlem Renaissance.
Incident- "Now I was eight and very small, And he was no whit bigger,And so I smiled, but he poked out His tongue, and called me, "Nigger." This poem would be considered a part of the Harlem Renaissance. This poem is about a kid who went to baltimore but didnt remember anything about what he say except when the guy called him out of his name.

Death around the corner was an excellent book. It constantly kept you on edge and always seemed like you were there when you read it.

Realism literature project 6
Realism shows the reality behind things it doesnt require you to use your imagination its just out there. Its not sugarcoated or based its something that you just read hear or see and automatically know what it is.
1. a. "The story of an hour" Mrs. Mallard is a lady whom probably does everything her husband wants yet second guesses marriage. In the story she has a husband who supposedly dies. She is told that her husband died, sobs a little and walks to her room. While looking out a simple window she hears and sees things that make her feel incredible. "The delicious rain was in the air. in the street below a peddler was crying his waves. the notes of a distant song which some was one singing reacherd her faint and sparrow twittering" The way this was described seems like she never paid any attention to these types of things before and it almost has a relaxed feel which she probably lacked. The author explains her feeling and to a suprise she was glad her husband was "DEAD". "Free, Body and Soul Free." Thats what she said and it shows her happiness. Her husband comes home and she drops dead because her joy was turned into disappointment.
b. The social issue Chopin wants to solve is women's rights. She believes women are basically slaves to their husbands. She wanted people to see the reality behind marriage.
2. a. Fredrick Douglass was a slave who seeked freedom. In the story "The battle with Mr. Covey" he tells of an encounter with a man who rented him for a year."You have seen a man made a slave, You shall see a slave made man" Fredrick douglass used that quote to reflect on his fight with Mr. Covey. Fredrick wen through a lot with him. He even tried to tell his big master on Mr. Covey. Fredrick tried many things but when once confronted by him he decided to fight back. This fight made Mr. Covey not hit Douglass again.
b. Social issue: Slavery was the social issue in this story. Douglass wanted to show people how bad slaves really had it.
c. Purpose for writing this? He was a slave self educated and wanted people to feel his place and let them know what he wen through. He was happy by his defeat. "It was a glorius ressurection from the tombs of slavery to the heaven of freedom"
3. The news is a perfect example of realism everyday i turn on the television and see horrible and gruesome things. The news shows everything that is happening and its hard to hear anything positive.

A Visit to Grandma's (writing 2)
On an old road where cows lie and their calves grow, there is a house behind a tree, but in front of a forest. An old black mailbox with the numbers 464 engraved on it tells the tale of a housekeeper who’s been there forever. The house is a brisk blue with a cemented pathway that leads to the wide screened door. The musty air hits you as soon as you walk in the door, and old "Sanford & Son" sitcoms can be heard throughout the house. The floor creaks and the smell of mustard greens and fresh trout symbolizes the "get together" of a close family. This is my Grandmother’s house.
On most Sundays before the passing of my beloved grandmother, our family got together and enjoyed the taste of good collard greens, fried porkchops, mac and cheese, chicken and dumplings and many more tasty items. I remember my grandma use to say, "Greens taste the best when a little frost hit em" and boy was she right. The taste of all these foods were enough to put local restaurants out of business - grandma could cook. Holidays were the best. On Thanksgiving we’d eat Turkey, the best dressing in the world with a little giblet gravy, a big juicy ham with pineapples for that sweet taste, duck with a little ginger dressing and a little peppercorn for the tangy taste and you were lucky if you had room for dessert. Sweet potato pie, Red velvet cake, banana pudding, and the ever so famous Potato soufflé.
On a day when she wasn’t cooking, you’d just stop and see her out in her lush garden pulling out weeds and planting the biggest petunias and elephant plants you’d ever seen. Sometimes you’d see her sitting in her rocking chair shucking corn with her long gray hair blowing in the wind. Like any other old person, she’d be on the phone gossiping about what happened in the family or watching her daily soap operas. She’d braid her hair and put on her housedress and go to cleaning. Her house was open to anyone in need. There is no surprise as to who you may see, from grandchildren to cousins, and to people from the church, her house was a harbor to all.
One thing about grandma’s house is it never had an exact smell, only smells you could remember. For instance, the beginning of spring meant the house would smell of pine and lemon furniture cleaner. In the summer the house would smell of dust and musty air from the fans and air conditioners. In fall the house would smell of cinnamon and in the wintertime the house would smell of old kerosene heaters. When you smelled whiting and trout somebody was coming over or grandma was in a good mood. The smells most memorable were the summer BBQ’s, the smell of hickory smoked ribs and grilled hotdogs were unimaginable.
At Grandma’s house you’d hear a blend of Al Green, Sam Cooke, and the Isley Brothers playing on an old record player. The sound of grease popping and the dryer going constantly is a lingering sound as are the doors slamming shut and the weak but demanding voice of grandma hollering at us kids telling us to stay in or out of the house. On get togethers you’d hear laughter and old stories about something someone did that was so embarrassing. You’d occasionally hear stray dogs barking and whining for food. You might even hear the sound of TV land or "The Price is Right" game show. One sound you would’ve gotten use to though is the sound of grandma’s footsteps going through the house. Her feet were so heavy that it sounded like a marching band or a parade going through the house.
When you first walk in grandma’s house you suddenly feel the warmth of her presence. The "Home Sweet Home" displays make you feel cozy and welcome. The greatest feel of all though is the one when you get the great big old hug from grandma that lets you know she’s happy to see you. The texture of her rough yet soft hands grasps your cheeks in an effort to let you know how beautiful you are. The sofa in the living room feels rough and worn out but makes the best sleeping accommodations.
From sundown to sunup the smell and the vision of my grandma’s house always lingers. Although she is gone she will never be forgotten. The house remains at still and the things that were once there aren’t anymore. I love to visit every once in a while just to catch up on old times, however the feelings not the same. From the meals to the holidays and best times my grandma’s house is the best place to visit in the world. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Dark Romanticism Literature Project 5
1. A. Nathaniel Hawthorne-He would be against transcendentalism because he believed part of his family were evil. He disowned his family and knew all people weren't good and pure. His family was his proof.
B. Herman Melville-Melville would definitely not be considered pure or good. He witnessed cannibals and knew that the world held unpure people. He wrote a book about a shark eating a sailors leg off called"Moby Dick". This shows that his mind held a little grain of evil and this would not be God's thoughts.
C. Edgar Allen Poe- This author is completely insane and would have disagreed with Transcendentalist because of what happened in his life. This author wrote about disturbing events that happened when the character was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
2. I don't believe everyone is good nor evil however, some things i disagree with are evil. I believe i would be a dark romantic because i don't believe the world or people are pure or good based on the things i see on the news. I think the Transcendentalist were crazy themselves if they thought the things they thought their beliefs were messed up.
3.Read one of the stories.
4. Poe's "The Black Cat" was very amazing yet devilish. He started as someone who described his love for pets. "i was especially fond of animals, and was indulged by my parents with a great variety of pets" Poe had a cat named Pluto he really loved this cat. "Pluto was the cat's name-was my favorite pet and playmate." Poe then talks about how he becomes very moody and irratible and then he snaps. " i seized him when in his fright at my violence he inflicted a slight wound upon my hand with his teeth. The fury of a demon instanly possessed me. I knew myself no longer. My original soul seemed at once to take its flight from my body; and a more than fiendish malevolence, gin nurtured thrilled every fibre of my frame. i took then from my coat pocket a pin knife opened it grasped the poor beast by the throat, and cut one if its eyes from the socket! i blush, i burn, i shudder while pen the damnable atrocity" This story was definaltyl crazy and shows the difference between Transcendentalist and Dark Romantics. Poe should have gone to a crazy bin. Poe would have thought he was indeed pure. Transcendentalists are really wrong on what they believe. One thing that really stuck out to me was "Evil thoughts became my sole intimates the darkest and most evil of thoughts" That shows that there are evil thoughts in our minds.
5."The Raven" How it stuck out and how is it anti transcendental? He is visited by a bird who will never go away and will always make him suffer. "From my nooks surcease of sorrow for the lost Lenore. For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore" this poem is about a raven who represents death coming and will never leave and constantly leave him in sorrow. This is anti transcendental because the Transcendentals would have never believed in a bird talking to someone or anything in that sense. Poe was an absolute lunatic.
6. When Poe was born his parents died. He was taken in by a merchant named John Allen. His brothe died and his sister went insane. He was a ddicted to drugs and often wrote aout this. All of Poe's wives died and he became more and more insane. He was smart and a dedicated writer. His writings are analyzed by many and are said to be about himself but given alter ego names.
